Councilmember Chun Join Local Officials At El Toro Memorial Park on Memorial Day Remembrance
Councilmember Chun joined local elected officials from across South Orange County to express gratitude for the sacrifices made by our armed forces and their families on Memorial Day. The Memorial Park staff jumped into action to assist Councilmember Chun when a sudden breeze upended the City of Aliso Viejo wreath, breaking it into several sections. With some quick thinking and ingenuity, the wreath was repaired on-the-spot and carefully placed according to tradition.
Councilmember Chun Continues His 12-Year Tradition of Scholarship Awards.
For the 12th year, Councilmember Chun has helped select scholarship recipients, and this year, along with the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation, has selected Lorenzo Gan as the graduating senior recipient. Aliso Viejo Youth Council Meets The Laguna Niguel Youth Committee
More than 5 years ago, Councilman Chun helped Aliso Niguel High School found the first Youth Council, which continued to provide opportunities for students to learn about public policy, local government and the Aliso Viejo economy. In 2023, and new group of students worked with Councilman Chun to re-invigorate the concept under a new name, The Aliso Viejo Youth Council. Now this new organization is reaching out to their Laguna Niguel counterparts to collaborate on a special event, the Human Trafficking Forum at Soka University. Council President Sanvi Shah presented the concept in the Laguna Niguel Council Chambers.
Soka University Hosts Their Own Career Fair On Campus
Each year, Soka University hosts its own career fair through its Student Affairs Department. Cities from across the county, as well as the Orange County Fire Authority, public utilities and event the FBI hosted booths to speak with students about career opportunities. Councilman Chun spoke to students and faculty about the non-profit realm and positions for volunteers, interns and full-time employment.

Councilman Ross Chun guides Aliso Niguel High School Club through successful grant application.
For more than 3 months, Councilman Chun worked with thee Aliso Niguel High School environmental club, the Eco-Freakos, to successfully apply for a grant from the Moulton Niguel Water District to fund a water bottle filling station. The students worked hard to complete the process, presenting their project to the MNWD Board and City of Laguna Niguel. Councilman Chun, who was in Sacramento on the day of the club's final presentation, was able to fly standby and returned to Aliso Viejo within minutes of the students' presentation. Now this enthusiastic group of ANHS students is preparing to apply for an additional grant!

Every week, various health care agencies analyze the infection rate of COVID cases, and provide cities with important data. Councilman Chun meets virtually throughout the week with various state and local sources to stay informed about the issues that are affecting Aliso Viejo.
Parents and Teachers join Coffee With Your Councilman to get critical safety updates.
For 8 years, Councilman Ross Chun has been hosting Coffee With Your Councilman at different coffee shops around Aliso Viejo as a means of engaging with the public and giving his constituents an opportunity to speak with him directly about the issues that matter most to them. No other member of the Aliso Viejo City Council has ever provided this kind of consistent access to the public. During the COVID-19 crisis, the public has been seeking guidance, leadership, and accountability from their elected officials. Councilman Chun is now hosting bi-weekly coffee chats virtually on Zoom so the public can inquire about important matters involving safety, state and county restrictions, municipal guidance on business and faith-based organization access and the opening of our schools. This is the access that Aliso Viejo residents need during this time of crisis, and the accountability that maintains the public trust.

Sunday morning, Councilman Ross Chun met virtually with the founders of CapoUSD Against Racism to discuss their strategy and their list of imperatives to attack racism in the school district and raise awareness about mental health issues and an ethnic education curriculum, all of which are top of mind with Ross. These Former CUSD students are working to establish their program at schools across the district, and recruit students to carry on their legacy as they depart for Cal Berkeley, Columbia University and other notable institutions of higher learning.

Supporting Scouts in Aliso Viejo
Each year, young men striving to become Eagle Scouts seek out government leaders for interviews and advice. Councilman Chun is frequently called upon to help scouts with many of their projects and requirements.

Sober Living Facilities Workshop
The League of California Cities is finalizing its plans for a workshop to discuss sober living facilities in the region and the state. The event is scheduled for March 18th in the City of Irvine from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Notable legislators like Dana Rohrbacher, Bill Brough, Pat Bates and Matthew Harper have all asked to join the panel discussion.
Sacramento Delegation
Councilman Chun joined over 80 of his elected colleagues as part of the OCBC/ACCOC Delegation to the state capitol. While in Sacramento, Councilman Chun met with members of the State Legislature to discuss issues such as sober living homes, short-term rentals and the water shortage.

Housing and Economic Development Policy Meetings in Sacramento
This week, Council Member Chun joined elected officials from around the state to discuss policy issues surrounded housing and specifically, group homes and sober living facilities.
Transportation Policy Meetings In The State Capitol
Today Council Member Chun joined the League of California Cities Transportation Policy Committee in Sacramento to discuss important issues facing the state's infrastructure. Our City of Aliso Viejo, like every other city in the state will face a growing deficit in maintenance and repair funding, as revenues from the gas tax continue to decline.
State level policy meetings give us an opportunity to present the concerns of our community, and today, Council Member Chun had an opportunity to again raise these issues with Senator Jim Beall, Chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Housing. Friday Ross will join the Housing Policy Committee to discuss the issues around short-term leasing, including Air B&B and Sober Living Facilities.
Regional Transportation Plan
This week, the Southern California Association of Governments presented local officials with a briefing of the Regional Transportation Plan, currently offered for public review. This important document is required for the regional planning organization to get transportation projects approved, and to qualify for any state and federal grants. This is your opportunity to comment on the proposed plan and its recommendations.

The Southern California Association of Governments held its annual Economic Summit this week in Los Angeles. Among many important topics, the summit discussed the Regional Transportation Plan and its beneficial affect on the California economy.

Bond Ratings Meeting in New York
This week Councilman Chun had the opportunity to present the positive outlook and strong economic growth anticipated in our region. The Transportation Corridor Agencies Executive Team, along with representatives from Barclay's and Goldman Sachs met with Moodys in New York to request a bond ratings upgrade. Councilman Chun, as the Chairman of the San Joaquin Hills Agency Board, presented the many positive economic indicators in the region and in the City of Aliso Viejo.

Association of California Cities Celebrates The Holidays
The Association of California Cities and The Orange County Business Council celebrated the holiday season at Andrei's in Irvine. Councilman Chun has been a strong and consistent advocate for good public policy and supported the city's ACCOC membership.
As a business owner in both Aliso Viejo and Irvine, Ross is an active participant in OCBC events and activities. One of his first acts as an Aliso Viejo City Councilman was to meet with Lucy Dunn and learn what our city can do to become a more active member of the OCBC.

A beautiful new Tony Pepperoni was opened today in Aliso Viejo. Councilman Ross Chun represented Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, presenting the owners with a certificate of recognition from the County.
Councilman Ross Chun Participates in Cap and Trade Workshop
The Southern California Association of Governments held a workshop for its member cities, giving a 3 hour briefing of Cap and Trade funds available to the region. Councilman Ross Chun took part in the workshop, representing the Transportation Corridor Agency.
Last year's Cap and Trade funds were awarded to very few cities in the SCAG Region, although Councilman Chun notified Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel and San Clemente of the opportunity of receiving their portion of $300,000,000 in Cap and Trade Funds for development projects.
Boys and Girls Club Celebrates the Yuletide
The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley celebrated its annual Yuletide last week at the home of Tonie and Steve Odekerk. Councilman Ross Chun and his wife Suzanne joined their friends at the Boys and Girls Club for the festivities.
Ross has been a long-time supporter of the organization, volunteering for the Boys and Girls Club at the El Toro Marine Corp Air Station through the 90"s when the base was operational.
SCAG RTP/SCS Approved for Public Review
Today, the Southern California Association of Governments Regional Council voted to release the Regional Transportation Plan for public review and comment. The council voted 39 to 1 to allow the public to give input to the transportation document. Council member Mike Munzing was the only director in opposition, voting to withhold the document from public review, with no explanation why.
The Regional Transportation Plan provides a long range vision for land use investments and transportation over a 20 year period and is a requirement of federal and state laws. SCAG's policy committees and Regional Council have worked diligently to revised this plan over a 4 year period, and the public has a right to review and comment on the document before it is submitted. The SCAG Regional Council went to great lengths to make with document available, including extending the comment period to 60 days.
Ross Chun Appointed by State League President
Today, Council Member Chun was appointed by State League President Dennis Michael to the League of California Cities Transportation Policy Committee. This state appointment will allow Council Member Chun to continue on the League's Orange County Division Board as director, and give input on state level transportation policy matters in 2016.

Newport Beach restaurant The Winery, owned and operated by Aliso Viejo residents JC and Linda Clow, welcomed local and state elected officials and business and community leaders in support of 5th District Supervisor Lisa Bartlett. Councilman Ross Chun has been a colleague of Supervisor Bartlett's from the Transportation Corridor Agency for 3 years, and a supporter of her campaign from the beginning.

Code of Conduct for Aliso Viejo City Council
For the 3rd time this year, Councilman Ross Chun introduced the need for a formalized Code of Conduct for the Aliso Viejo City Council, and was met with opposition. "A code of conduct establishes our council's commitment to fair and ethical behavior, and a standard that the voters expect. I would like to see a code formalized and each council member sign a commitment to adhere to the Code of Conduct each year." Mayor Pro Tem Munzing opposed the proposed Code of Conduct without discussion and stated for the record that he would vote "No" on such a measure.

Journey School Celebrates the Season
On Saturday, November 14th, Aliso Viejo's Journey School celebrated the Fall with their annual Harvest Faire. With over a thousand community members in attendance, Councilman Chun worked with local schools to arrange overflow parking, and ensure that Aliso Viejo Little League parking at Woodfield Park would NOT be impacted. The event was one of the largest ever, with fun and entertainment for all.
Canyon Vista Elementary School Honors Aliso Viejo Vets
Early last week, Councilman Chun honored our city's veterans at a breakfast and ceremony at Canyon Vista Elementary School. "It's been a few years since my children finished at Canyon Vista, but I am happy to see the enthusiasm and dedication to the students is still strong. Thank you for honoring our vets!"

Aliso Viejo's newest hotel is on schedule for completion at the first of the year. Councilman Chun toured the construction with city officials and staff on Friday, November 13th to see the progress and speak to the builders. Aliso Viejo residents, their families, visitors and business people can look forward to more choices when they visit our city.
Ambry Genetics is Growing
Friday the 13th was the day for an exciting tour of the expansion of Aliso Viejo-based Ambry Genetics. Councilman Ross Chun and other city officials were invited to tour the new Ambry facility, the 4th building to have the Ambry Genetics on it in Aliso Viejo. Congratulations to a great business leader and global company in our city.
ACCOC Committee on Diversity and Changing Demographics
Councilman Ross Chun presented the Association of California Cities with a proposal to form a committee to address diversity issues and the changing demographics in our region. The board voted unanimously to establish this special committee and appointed Councilman Chun to chair the committee and lead the effort toward more engagement and more effective communication with diverse groups.
Environmental Committee for the Toll Roads
Three years ago, Councilmember Ross Chun proposed a special ad-hoc committee to ensure the Tolls Roads met and complied with state and federally mandated environmental restrictions, as well as informed the public about those measures that were being implemented to ensure transparency. That committee has now been established as a standing committee, open to the public, and Council Member Chun was elected its Chair.
